This move for what is considered a traditional “Fertiliser Cooperative” was born from pricing disparities between what New Zealand Farmers were paying retail for their Agrochemical Inputs versus Farmers in other parts of the world. The pricing disparity was just too great to be explained by geographical location or size of the New Zealand Market.
After careful consideration and research Ravensdown entered this market reducing retail prices from 5 – 50 percent depending on the agrochemical. This move had immediate impact on the market with Retail Prices tumbling through other suppliers in order to stay competitive. It is estimated that Ravensdown saved New Zealand Farmers 20 million dollars in the first year of being in agrochemicals. This trend has continued with retail agchem prices staying considerably lower than prior to Ravensdown’s entry.
Based on the entry level prices market share was achieved immediately and was supported by Ravensdown Shareholders, this loyalty has been a key component to the success moving forward.
