Guardian

Physical Description

Contains 40g/litre of Nicosulfuron in the form of an oil dispersion.

Chemical Group

Sulfonylurea urea

Uses

Guardian is used post crop emergence for the control of perennial and annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds in maize grain and silage.

Benefits

Guardian provides superior control of many hard to kill annual and perennial grass species in maize as well as some broadleaf weeds such as triazine and dicamba resistant Fathen. Can be readily mixed with many other post emergence herbicides commonly used in maize crops such as Ravensdown Atrazine 90 DF and Dicam 480.

Application

Apply Guardian evenly to the weed canopy using ground based spray equipment at a minimum water rate of 200L/ha. Position the boom nozzles between the rows of maize for direct coverage of weeds. The use of nozzles on droppers from the boom will improve target weed coverage. For best results Guardian should be applied before weeds have reached the 4 true leaf stage. Weeds past the 4 true leaf stage may only be suppressed. The maize crop growth stage best for application is between 2 and 8 leaf stage when the crop is growing vigorously without moisture stress. Applications to maize plants greater than 500mm in height risk crop injury.

Mode of Action

Guardian is rapidly absorbed by foliage and translocated throughout weeds. This stops the synthesis of vital plant growth chemicals. Weeds stop growing immediately and discolouration of leaves occurs, followed by dieback that spreads slowly throughout the weed.

Environmental Fate

Guardian residuals can persist in the soil for up to 5 months depending on soil conditions and rainfall conditions.

Withholding Period

For silage maize, 56 days.
