Maize Guard

Physical Description:

Contains 840g/litre acetochlor in the form of an emulsifiable concentrate.

Uses:

Persistent, residual weed killer for use in maize or sweetcorn.

Apply pre-emergence of both crop and weeds.  Effectively controls both grass and broad leaf weeds. Consult label for specific weed species.

Normally mixed with atrazine to increase weed spectrum.

Benefits:

  • Annual grasses controlled including summer grass, annual poa, bristle grass, crowfoot grass, witch grass and barnyard grass.
  • Broadleaf weeds controlled black nightshade, redroot, fat hen and willow weed.

Early removal of emerging weeds is critical to achieving high maize yields. Maize Guard has robust activity across a range of soil types including peat, sands and clays and is also more active than other compounds in dry conditions. Organic soils and low soil moisture do reduce activity.

Application:

  • Apply immediately after planting for best results, late application can result in lower levels of weed control.
  • Use 3 litres of Maize Guard per hectare in 200 - 300 litres of water, ensuring even coverage of soil surface.
  • Tank mix with Atraflo herbicide and / or Toppel insecticide.
  • Surface applied applications of Maize Guard will work under dry soil conditions, but soil moisture will improve activity.
  • A fine firm seedbed will improve weed control. ·
  • Maize Guard can be applied and incorporated pre-planting. This can be done by performing normal seedbed preparation to achieve a seedbed free of plant residues and clods. Then surface apply Maize Guard and follow with a tined cultivator, incorporating to a maximum depth of 50cm. Maize can then be planted.

Withholding Period:

There's no withholding period for Maize Guard, however if crop failure occurs consult with the local agrochemical specialist for advice on suitable crops to plant and procedures to limit residual carryover.

Storage & Handling:

Carrier will require a Dangerous Goods license to collect this product.

Environmental Fate:

Maize Guard is broken down by naturally occurring soil bacteria. It is a short term residual, meaning it has a half life under normal soil conditions of 2 - 3 months.

Additional Information:

Must be applied prior to weed germination. As weeds germinate the active ingredient is absorbed through the shoots. Rainfall is important to activate the herbicide and also encourage a rapid and even germination of weeds. Under normal use, soil residues should not carry over to successive crops. On peat soils cultivate the soil before establishing pasture.
