Faecal spore counting (FSC) involves counting the spores that have actually passed through the animal (they pass through the intestinal tract unchanged). This gives a very accurate assessment of actual spore intake by the stock and avoids the variability seen with pasture spore counting.
Once the risk to stock has been assessed, then appropriate measures can be taken. High frequency monitoring means that problems can be detected before significant production loss sets in.
Faecal spore counting service
A faecal spore counting service is available to farmers though Ravensdown. This is accessed via a special faecal spore counting test kit (similar to a self-sampling soil test kit).
Samples collected by the farmer will be sent in the courier pack and results will be relayed back to the farmer via one of the Ravensdown animal health team. Full instructions are included on the submission form in the sampling kit.
Sampling process
Collect random, fresh, samples directly from the paddock (avoid collecting soil or plant matter)
Take the 10 sample pottles and collect a sample from each of 10 different faecal pats. (These 10 samples will be pooled in the laboratory to give an average count for the mob)
Screw the lid on the pottles tightly
Place the sample pottles into the outer plastic bag and seal properly
Place the completed submission form and the plastic bag with the pottles into the courier pack
Phone the courier to arrange pick up of the courier pack. (the phone number is on the reverse of the courier pack provided)
Refrigerate (but do not freeze) the courier pack until it is sent. (it can last for several days in the fridge)
Do not send on a Friday or the day before a public holiday
