Liver testing background
While it has been shown that 20-30% of farms in NZ are deficient in at least one of the three main trace elements (copper, cobalt and selenium), only a small percentage of farmers are testing regularly. To test animals for trace elements, there are three methods:
Blood testing
Liver biopsy (removing a piece of liver from a live animal)
Liver sampling after slaughter at the meatworks
Liver trace element testing at the meat works has traditionally been organised by veterinarians liaising with the meat companies, but this has had the disadvantages of involving extra paperwork, and often liver samples were not collected when requested due to process failure. Ravensdown operates a simpler, easier and more reliable liver trace element testing scheme, which has been accepted by all meat companies except Alliance.
