Benefits of Holdup™

Growth regulator used to shorten and stiffen the straw of cereal crops to improve resistance to lodging

Mainly used in feed barley and cereal silage crops

By stiffening and shortening the straw of these cereal crops, they become less prone to lodging, which is where the crop is either too top heavy from grain yield or after a heavy dew or rain and the stems simply kink and break.

Lodging is one of the most common causes of yield depression in New Zealand. Often lodged crops look as if something has landed in the paddock and flattened out large areas.

Neck break in Barley is also a severe problem which is where the seed head (ear) becomes too top heavy and combined with wind can snap off 2 - 10 cm below the seed head, again causing massive yield loss. Holdup can overcome these problems by shortening, strengthening and stiffening the crop straw.

Application

Can be applied either through ground boom spray units or aerially. Do not apply to crops of low fertility or on crops grown on light soils which would be likely to suffer moisture stress.

Do not apply to crops suffering from physical stress such as frost, hail, water logging, drought or nutrient stress. Do not apply to crops suffering from herbicide damage.

Mode of action

Holdup is taken in through the stems and leaves of growing plants, where it is translocated within the plant. Simply instead of allowing the cells to divide evenly vertically, it changes the cellular structure so the divide horizontally. This causes a shortening and thickening of the stems, resulting in a stronger, shorter and thicker plant stem.
