Where Are They Now? – Ravensdown Hugh Williams Memorial Scholarship

Share:

This year, we’re catching up with past Hugh Williams scholarship winners, with a new profile every fortnight. Stay tuned as we find out... where are they now?

This week, we speak with PhD student Lucy Bell. Lucy won the scholarship in 2016, which led her to work with us in the Ravensdown Graduate Programme. She later returned to Lincoln University, where she recently submitted her PhD thesis in soil science.

What are you doing for work now, and where are you based?

Having recently submitted my PhD thesis at Lincoln University I am currently doing casual farm work in Otago with plans to travel overseas this winter.

How did the Hugh Williams Scholarship open doors for you?

I deeply valued the mentorship provided by Ravensdown and Gordy McCormick following being awarded the Hugh Williams Scholarship, which not only enriched my undergraduate experience but also gave me invaluable industry insights. This support opened the door for me to join the Ravensdown graduate program. I really enjoyed my time with Ravensdown until I was invited back to Lincoln University to study for a PhD in soil science.

What is your proudest achievement in your career so far?

The proudest achievement of my career so far is submitting my PhD. However, I feel my career is only just getting started and I am really excited about the future!

What do you feel the agricultural sector is missing right now, and where do you think the next generation can really make an impact?

The agricultural sector and farmers want sound advice grounded in robust scientific research and tailored to the unique challenges each farm faces. While some disinformation can exist, I think the next generation has a critical opportunity to make an impact by combining cutting-edge science and innovation with practical application to address the challenges the sector faces.

What advice would you give to those thinking about applying for the scholarship?

Make the most of every opportunity during your studies.

 What’s next for you?

After I return from my OE later in the year, I am excited to be looking for a job to apply the skills and knowledge that I have built over my time at Ravensdown and during my doctorate.
